Alex started playing drums in 2002 and was originally inspired by Korn’s drummer, David Silveria, Rush’s Neil Peart and Alex Van Halen. He learned drumming technique and notation from William Woodley who taught at Music Unlimited in San Leandro. At Ohlone Community College, he studied music theory and played in Jazz and Rock performance classes where he acquired a deeper understanding of the origins of modern music and the individual musicians who pushed the boundaries.
Early in his drumming career he was a disciple to Korn, then Metallica, then Van Halen, AC/DC and other older artists. Eventually he gravitated toward bands such as Tool and Dream Theater, which sparked his interest in odd time signatures and more complex arrangements.
The first band he joined was Psychiatric Format Pill, which was heavy Rock with an operatic undertone due to the vocalist’s singing style. Later he joined Claymation Horror Show and Haunted Ghost Town. Claymation Horror Show was a Progressive Metal band that drew influence from artists such as Mr. Bungle, Megadeth and Rush. This was the most challenging group Alex had ever played in because of their complex arrangements, varying time signatures and changing tempos. Alex played on the album, Does Not Play Well with Others, and his most memorable performance with them was at the Rock Bar in San Jose.
After a successful stint with Claymation Horror Show, Alex was referred to Haunted Ghost Town to audition as their new drummer in the spring of 2015. Haunted Ghost Town was a Progressive Rock band with a female lead vocalist and Benjamin McSherry as its main composer. Alex joined Haunted Ghost Town in time to record the EP, Theories of The Universe, and the single, Oracles.
